The 7-Point Checklist

How many of these does your family have covered?

1. Life Insurance in Force

Your family can cover expenses, debt, and lost income if you're gone. Without it, one event can undo everything you've built. Term, whole life, or a combination — something is better than nothing.

2. Mortgage Protection

Your home stays in the family no matter what happens to you. Mortgage protection insurance ensures your family doesn't have to choose between grief and making payments.

3. Will or Trust in Place

Legally specifies who gets what and who cares for your kids. Without a will, the state decides — and it rarely matches what you would have wanted.

4. Named Beneficiaries Updated

On every life insurance policy, 401(k), IRA, and bank account. An outdated beneficiary can send your money to the wrong person — even after a divorce.

5. Emergency Fund (3–6 Months)

Buys time without forcing bad financial decisions. A job loss or medical event doesn't have to become a financial crisis if you have a buffer in place.

6. Disability Coverage

Your income is your most valuable asset — protect it. You're statistically more likely to become disabled than to die during your working years. Most people have no coverage for this.

7. Your Agent's Direct Number Saved

Not an 800 number. A real person who knows your file. When something happens, your family should be able to call one person who picks up — not sit on hold with a call center.
